Who started it?
SMUC Radio was set up in October 2008 by Eamonn McCrystal. The first show was broadcast at 7am on 19 February 2009 and was launched by a host of SMUC Radio presenters.
Where are the studios?
The studios are based at St Mary’s Students’ Union building. All of the equipment was purchased especially for the station.
Who’s the boss?
The station is a voluntary organisation run by students and staff. The station is an integral part of the Students’ Union and is a department within the SMSU. It has a structured committee layout i.e. Management and Sales, Programming and Production and Web and IT. Like many other stations it has a station manager and programme controller.
How and when can we listen?
SMUC Radio broadcasts at www.smucradio.com 24 hours a day 7 days a week across the world online!
The presenters are students or staff, who volunteer to put time and effort into the success of the station.
“It’s a great project and it’s a brilliant feeling when you’ve just done a show and someone comes up to you and says ‘I heard this on your show – it was good’. It’s quite exciting.”
Why should we listen?
As well as playing the best in pop, rock and dance music SMUC Radio carries a whole range of information about events and developments within the University and student community as well as information jingles on student health and welfare issues and news items targeted at students.
Is it successful?
If you can measure sucess by the amount of celebs that have already popped in to say “hello”- then YES it is very successful when you think that we have spoken to people like Josh Hartnett, Lily Allen, Aisylene Horgan Wallace, Judi Dench, Goldie Lookin’ Chain and Meterostation to name a few!
SMUC Radio has also been nominated for a 2009 SR Assocation award- so fingers crossed we’ll do well!
Can more students get involved?
There are plenty of jobs to do in radio so you don’t have to be a presenter to take part. SMUC Radio are always eager to hear from students who want to take part. Become a member for just £10 today! |
